Retransfer Ribbon
Composition: The retransfer ribbon typically consists of four color panels (YMCK): Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black. Some ribbons may also include additional panels such as a clear overlay or specialized panels for security features.
Printing Process:
- The printer first uses thermal transfer technology to apply each color onto the retransfer film. This is done one color at a time through a precise heating process that bonds the dye onto the film.
- Unlike direct-to-card printers, where the ink is applied directly to the card, in retransfer printing, the image is first created on the retransfer film.
Retransfer Film
Composition: The retransfer film is a clear, transparent material upon which the image from the ribbon is applied.
Transfer Process:
- Once the complete image is created on the retransfer film, the printer uses heat and pressure to transfer this image from the film onto the card.
- This transfer process ensures that the entire surface of the card is covered, including edge-to-edge and even surface imperfections, providing a more durable and vibrant finish.
